Canada Day: Titans of True Wealth
Celebrating the generosity of the Gilgan and Temerty families
On this Canada Day, while many celebrate with fireworks and flags, I want to honour these families whose generosity has quietly reshaped our healthcare landscape. Thank you Peter Gilgan and James & Louise Temerty!
Their names may be etched onto buildings — but their real legacy is written in lives saved, systems strengthened, and futures secured.
Peter Gilgan’s Commitment: Transforming Healthcare at Scale
Peter Gilgan , founder and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management , recently made the largest single hospital donation in Canadian history — a staggering $105 million to Trillium Health Partners . This historic investment will fuel the creation of the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and the revitalization of the Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre, setting a new national benchmark for patient care and innovation.
In 1989, I started my medical career at the Mississauga Hospital when it was a small community hospital. It is where I first met Peter Gilgan. And to see it now – becoming the largest teaching hospital in Canada when it’s completed by 2033 is humbling – and having a front seat on the sidelines – I plan to be there to see the ribbon cutting ceremony!
This is not Peter Gilgan’s first act of generosity. He was born at St. Joseph’s Health Centre — and has now donated more than $70 million to it, part of a broader $100+ million contribution to Unity Health Toronto . For him, giving back is deeply personal. It’s about demonstrating leadership by paying it forward.
The Personal Touch of James & Louise Temerty
Meanwhile, James and Louise Temerty, co-founders of Northland Power Inc. , has long been a force for good — most notably with a $250 million donation to the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto , which now proudly bears their name and is my alma mater. Their impact spans healthcare, education, culture, and innovation — empowering not only institutions, but people.
They supported the Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Centre, and more recently the development of MOLLI — a groundbreaking breast cancer detection system now considered a new standard for precision tumor localization. Earlier, they helped advance magnetic brain stimulation for depression at CAMH , led by my colleague Dr. Jeff Daskalakis . Their generosity also brought to life the CAMH Research & Discovery Centre. With upcoming initiatives in prostate cancer and ALS, their giving continues to be deeply informed by compassion and a belief in science as a powerful force for healing.
I’ve had the privilege to observe how personally and thoughtfully James and Louise Temerty approach their philanthropy. What stands out to me is how deeply their giving is tied to lived experience — you can feel that every initiative comes from a place of understanding suffering, and a desire to change outcomes for others. It’s not distant. It’s engaged, intentional, and quietly powerful.
Why This Matters Today
At The Bespoke Wellness Group , we are privileged to support the health journeys of visionary families — those who not only invest in their own well-being, but in the well-being of millions of Canadians. As we prepare to launch our next chapter — expanding into education, AI-powered tools, and comprehensive longevity and functional health programs — our mission remains clear: to empower families to lead longer, healthier, more fulfilling lives, with the clarity and tools to prevent illness before it begins. Guided by the example and insight of the many leaders and their families we serve, we’re scaling this vision — so that what benefits the few can ultimately uplift many more Canadians too.
Let this be a call-to-action for every Canadian who wants to leave a mark.
Because true wealth is not what we keep. It’s what we pass on.
